Job Description

Make a profound impact on individuals' paths to recovery with Mentalzon.com. We are seeking compassionate and skilled certified or licensed Substance Abuse Counselors across the US to provide essential support and guidance via telehealth. If you hold a recognized state credential authorizing you to help individuals overcome addiction and are seeking a flexible, independent way to utilize your expertise, our platform is for you. Connect directly with clients needing specialized substance abuse counseling and build your remote practice on your terms.

Mentalzon.com facilitates the connections, allowing you to focus your energy on providing high-quality addiction counseling and support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Remote Substance Abuse Counseling: Conduct comprehensive substance use assessments (knowledge of ASAM criteria preferred), develop individualized treatment plans, and provide individual counseling focused on addiction, recovery, and co-occurring issues (within scope) via secure, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing.
  • Relapse Prevention & Skill Building: Implement evidence-based relapse prevention strategies and assist clients in developing effective coping skills for managing triggers and cravings.
  • Psychoeducation: Educate clients (and potentially families, with appropriate consent) about the nature of addiction, the recovery process, treatment options, and community resources.
  • Clinical Documentation: Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client records in strict compliance with HIPAA, federal confidentiality regulations (42 CFR Part 2), state requirements, and ethical standards for addiction professionals.
  • Ethical & Legal Compliance: Adhere rigorously to the NAADAC (National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors) Code of Ethics, state licensing/certification board regulations, 42 CFR Part 2, and all other applicable laws.
  • Client Communication: Communicate effectively and empathetically with clients regarding their treatment progress, goals, challenges, and expectations.
  • Direct Fee Management: Establish your professional service fees and manage billing and payment collection directly with your clients.

Requirements:

  • Education & Training: Minimum level of education (e.g., Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's) and specific substance use disorder training as required to obtain and maintain the necessary state credential (see below).
  • Licensure/Certification: Must possess a current, active state-issued license or certification specifically authorizing the practice of substance abuse/addiction counseling (e.g., LADC, LCDC, CADC-II/III, MAC, or equivalent state credential). Your credential must permit independent or telehealth practice according to your state's regulations. Must understand and adhere to state scope of practice.
  • Experience: Demonstrated post-credentialing experience providing direct substance abuse counseling services. Experience utilizing evidence-based practices (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, CBT, DBT skills adapted for SUD) is strongly preferred.
  • Telehealth Competency: Proficiency in using HIPAA-compliant video conferencing platforms and electronic record-keeping systems. Understanding of best practices for delivering addiction counseling via telehealth.
  • Legal & Ethical Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2 (heightened confidentiality for SUD records) , state laws and regulations governing addiction professionals and telehealth, and the NAADAC Code of Ethics.
  • Professional Liability Insurance: Must maintain active professional liability (malpractice) insurance covering your scope of practice as a substance abuse counselor.
  • Skills:
    • Strong substance use assessment and treatment planning skills.
    • Proficient individual counseling techniques applicable to addiction.
    • Knowledge of various recovery models and relapse prevention strategies.
    • Excellent communication, active listening, and empathy skills.
    • Cultural competence and sensitivity.
    • Reliability, organization, and strong ethical boundaries.
    • Commitment to ongoing professional development in the field of addiction counseling.

Conditions of Collaboration:

  • Status: Independent Contractor (1099).
  • Flexibility: Choose your own work hours and schedule – full-time, part-time, or supplemental work based on your availability (e.g., 3-20+ hours/week).
  • Autonomy: Maintain full control over your client caseload, counseling approach (within ethical/evidence-based bounds), and schedule.
  • Remote Work: Provide services from a secure, private location anywhere within the US where you are appropriately credentialed and compliant with telehealth laws.
  • Set Your Rates: Determine your own competitive fees for your counseling services.
  • Direct Client Payment: Receive payments directly from clients without platform commissions on your session fees.
  • Client Connections: Gain visibility and connect with individuals specifically seeking remote substance abuse counseling through Mentalzon.com.
  • Platform Support: Benefit from Mentalzon's marketing efforts and receive technical support for using the platform effectively.
  • Build Your Practice: Opportunity to gather client feedback (appropriately managed) to enhance your professional reputation.
